Complete Japanese Loft Interior at a Dutch Residence

Sukiyado was approached by a lovely couple with Japanese roots with the request to transform the loft of their newly purchased home in the Netherlands into a fully equipped authentic Japanese retreat. The project was to involve the entire top floor of the home including two rooms, a hallway and staircase. When walking up the stairs, one should feel like they are truly leaving the European style home and are entering an authentic part of Japanese architecture.

The Interior Design

Complete Japanese Loft Interior Project

3D Interior Design with the Highest Levels of Quality and Authenticity

After a delightful meeting with our new clients, the specialized architect of Sukiyado started working on the Japanese interior design by first recreating the modern loft in our 3D environment based on the true dimensions.

When entering the Japanese loft from the first floor, a splendid minimalistic vertical wooden lattice work, known as Kōshi Mado (格子窓), can be seen separating the staircase with an original garden-like hallway with gravel and stepping stones. This unique concept brings the natural essence of Japanese landscaping to the interior which can also be seen at high-end restaurants and hotels in Japan.

This beautiful hallway connects to two different rooms separated by traditional Shoji sliding doors, with a small laundry room on the side and the main Washitsu room at the end. This room can be used for unwinding and relaxing while sitting on the authentic Tatami floor and drinking tea. The walls, painted in traditional soft green and broken white colors, further enhance the sense of spaciousness and tranquility. The concept of simplicity and serenity imbues the entire loft design.

The Construction Process

Complete Woodwork Construction, Crafted to Perfection

Once the design was completed, we presented it to our clients with great success. They were very enthusiastic and immediately asked our woodworkers to create their Japanese dream interior with only a few minor changes to the design. Primarily the garden-like hallway of the original design which, although very beautiful, was replaced with a more simple wooden floor due to purely practical reasons.

Normally we create the interior woodwork in its entirety in our own workshop, but with this project we also often worked on location. Our clients were very open and hospitable for our woodworkers so this made it very easy for us to create, adjust, and directly install all the woodwork in the interior.

The Meaning behind Sukiyado

The name Sukiyado is derived from the Japanese residential architectural style known as Sukiya-zukuri (数寄屋造り). This style is known for its informal aspects and evolved from the more formal Shoin-zukuri style. The word ‘Suki’ means refined taste or elegant pursuits, which perfectly captures the essence of Sukiya-zukuri. With the added suffix ‘Do’, meaning way or path, Sukiyado can freely be translated as ‘The Way of Elegant Pursuits’.
